This course is for the more committed learner and for those who may want to complete a work exchange or become a renting member of our studio. In the 5 weeks this course will cover multiple possibilities for printing on a Vandercook Proof press, including: typesetting from antique metal and wood type, printing mounted linoleum blocks, and how to print and design polymer plates. Students will then have 2 classes to work on a small project of their own using a mixture of these techniques, discussing the project with the instructor and receiving help where necessary. Examples of a suitable small-scale project might include: typeset book cover, poetry broadside, poster, or Invitation. The class size will be limited to four people and we must get a minimum of 3 in the course in order to run it. If you've taken a class with us before, you are also welcome to use this course as a "next-step" in understanding the equipment and studio more fully and use an additional week to work on your project (for instance if you've already taken the polymer plate class, you could use week 3 to just continue your personal project). The schedule will be as follows: Week 1 - Overview of the Vandercook and the importance of making your matrix "type high" - 8x10 print from wood and metal type - Safe operation of press, ink mixing and cleaning up Week 2 - Printing from Linoleum blocks or type-high lego bases with tiles - introducing imagery and possibility of combining type and carved elements - printing a small ex-libris bookplate Week 3 - Discussion and demo of preparing artwork for, and the making of, a polymer plate - printing from a polymer plate demo - one on one with instructor to discuss personal print project Week 4 - working on personal project with assistance and guidance from instructor Week 5 - working on personal project with assistance and guidance from instructor Sign up with a friend and save $20 each (checkout separately and include your friend's name in the note on your order) enter code BFF20 at checkout.
